Who does the dialysis on the cruise? I'm an acute RN and just curious who works?
Posted by: Debby Ely | 05/24/2009 at 06:00 AM
Debbiy, we're all home dialyzors and bringing our own machines. We either do our treatments alone or with the help of care partners. Many of us haelp years of experience doing it at the best location one can choose -- home!
Thare's many that say home isn't for everybody. Our motto is in-center isn't for everybody. So for one week, we're going to vacation together, and have fun together. We're also most like to make history as the largest contingent of home dialyzors ever to cruise together. At least that's what our application to the Guinness World Records is all about.

Just found out about cruise via the NxStage Home publication. Interested in the cruise BUT, my biggest concern is what happens if you need medical help while on the cruise? Medicare does NOT cover charges in foreign countries I am told. Most cruise ships have a medical unit but will not bill insurance companies and require payment up front. These charges are quite high. Do I understand info posted that a Home Hemo patient can take their own NxStage machine on the cruise and do their treatments in their rooms???What IF they have a problem with their machine. (If you were at home, NxStage would overnight you a replacement machine.)
As far as land excursions are concerned, you can generally do
A LOT better if you book thru a local sight-seeing company/or individual in each port rather than with the tours that the cruise ship offers; also less expensive. Please check into that avenue. Thx, Donnie

Donnie, I think we have practically everything covered. We've all taken out insurance policies so the medical, if necessary, is covered. Also, if you need to be airlifted from the boat. But we're all being a little more positive that nothing will.
Yes, we'll be taking our own NxStage cyslers on the cruise, and NxStage will be shipping supplies to us in bulk directly to the boat. That means dialysate cartridges warming bags and waste lines. We'll be responsible for the rest, but I think we'll be able to get saline shipped in bulk too.
If there's a remote problem with a cycler, don't worry, we're going to have plenty on the ship. We have both SDD and nocturnal dialyzors going. There will always be a spare to share.
Regarding the excursions, that's what I was thinking about. I've never cruised, but others have and are experienced. Hopefully Pat, who is a travel agent, will be able to set something up once we know what people's preferences are.
