RenalWeb links to a story out of Britain Grandfather denied home kidney dialysis for 'cost reasons' - even though it's £90,000 cheaper than having the same treatment in hospital. It is a hugely frustrating situation to want something and be given a spurious reason for not being able to have it. Add in the life enhancing qualities of switching from incenter to home dialysis and it's just about intolerable.
Dr Soo-Chung [Primary Care Trust chief executive] replied: "In line with our strategic commitment to deliver our 2007-8 savings targets to reduce the PCT's inherited financial deficit, and the requirement to achieve in-year financial balance, all service commissioning developments in need of potential investment have to demonstrate value for money and meet cost-effectiveness and affordability criteria."
What a stunning display of bureaucratic myopia, hidden behind a screen of buzz word babble.
