I previously reported on the inspirational determination of Shad Ireland to promote physical activity among renal dialysis patients by his participation in ironman competitions. Shad has not only survived serious infections and a coma, but at one point weighed only ninety pounds before he himself was inspired by watching an ironman competition. He is now the only CKD-5 patient on hemodialysis therapy to complete several ironman competitions.
The beneficial effects of exercise on CKD-5 patients is further highlighted in an excellent review on this subject published in the American Journal of Physiology in 2006. Exercise is a much underutilized adjunct to all of the modern dialysis treatments yet studies have shown an immediate reduction in mortality of 10-15%.
I continue to be amazed by Shad Ireland’s story and the attention that he is receiving is truly deserved. May we all take heed of Shad’s testimony of a changed life through vigorous and ongoing exercise.

Thank you for your kind words and inspirational story which is helping me to inspire patients. I appreciate your support!!! On May 1st I will begin the What Inspires You Tour across America. The companion website launched Dec 11th, 2009. www.whatinspiresyou.us
Together we can make a difference!
NO LIMITATIONS ONLY INSPIRATION

As one who has passed his 26th year on in-center hemodialysis (no transplant) I can personally attest to the positive effects of a regular exercise program.
