The full ER episode Old Times (Season 15 : Episode 19) is now available online, I thought is was pretty good. Spoilers Ahead
Dr. Carter gets his kidney through a not entirely factual process - as Brian said in comments that should have been his kidney (and pancreas) but for the purposes of dramatic story telling is was good. Dr. Ross and Carol Hathaway, who married and left the show many seasons ago for the good life in Seattle, are the ones who need to convince a grandmother (Susan Sarandon) that her only grandson really is beyond medical help and it is time to donate his organs.
For me the best scene was as Carter wakes up in the recovery room post transplant with Dr. Benton at his side (viewers of the show's early years will remember the Carter/Benton relationship as one of the reasons the show was so good; this episode reminded me exactly why I liked ER so much back in the '90s).
That is exactly right. Liquid gold: a very precious liquid. Anyone who has had a transplant (particularly someone like me who has not urinated a drop for over a dozen years) cherishes every drop of something a normal urinator sees only as an inconvenience. I think Dr. Carter has one more episode in this final season of ER but so far I have to say I think it has been well done and I tip my hat to the writers and all involved in this story line. Thank you for picking chronic kidney disease.
