Excellent points, Brian. Funny how providing care that is physiological can help people feel better on a day-to-day basis and prevent long-term complications. There is so much inside-the-box thinking in dialysis. It's unconscionable that the default treatment in the U.S. is the most costly, LEAST physiological option--with the poorest outcomes in the civilized world. Diabetes treatment truly is analogous. Thanks for a great article.

Interesting post, the story you've provided will be inspiring for the diabetic, however, only God will help us find the cure for this disease.

On the contrary, I would maintain that the changes in diabetes treatment and the recommended 'improvements' in dialysis treatment both represent the same mistake: In both cases, the intensification of treatment to improve certain physiological values also intensifies the inference with normal life by the treatment, so that net quality of life is so much reduced by the exaggerated medicalization of the patient's life that this outweighs any health benefits. Think in terms not just of years of life gained, but net QUALYs achieved.
