2008 image of a device that prevents water backflow. Water backflow, the movement of water from an end user into the water system, is a concern in some municipalities to the degree that they require a device such as this one to stand between the municipal water source and a home dialysis water treatment system.
This photo shows a backflow preventer not in use. The water feed line is coming in from the left, going down to the drain is a catchment for water seepage at a pressure bleed valve. An outlet line would be connected to the gray port on the end opposite the feed line.
